Perri Hart, born October 10, 1957 to Johnny and Bobby Hart in upstate, (Binghamton) New York.
I grew up and lived my entire life in Endicott, NY,...where in 1975 I graduated from the same High School as my father did 26 years before me. In those early years I knew I wanted to attend Art School one day, specifically in photography. I was a good student but I often cut my regular academic classes in favor of going into the photography labs. Eventually the Principal gave up trying to get me to attend my regular classes, although I did go to them long enough to graduate high school.
After graduation I was accepted to: The School of the Museum of Fine Art, in Boston, MA. with a major in Photography, Film, and Video. While in college I assisted with the editing and still photography on a commercial for Citibank in NYC, as well a few local shorts in the Boston area. I learned a great deal in college and loved every day I spent there, specifically working in the B&W negative medium with an emphasis on infrared film. I had the opportunity to learn from many talented artists and teachers, including photographer James Dow. I graduated from The Museum School in 1980.
After college I stayed in Boston for a few years and began working in a custom B&W Photography Lab, Panopticon, Inc. I did everything there from film developing, custom black and white printing, matte & framing and photo retouching. I also owned my own Video production company, Spectra Wave, Inc. located in Cambridge, MA, for a few years, where I produced video and photography pieces
for a wide variety of things, including training tapes, instructional videos, outdoor marches and marathons,
as well as musical loops for local clubs.
In 1985, missing my home town and family I returned to upstate NY to live and began working with my father, Johnny Hart, in his cartooning business.
I spent the past 23 years learning and working with my Dad on his comic strips, B.C. and The Wizard of Id.
My Dad was an amazingly talented man! He taught me everything he knew in the art/cartooning world. My photography, film and video schooling came in handy, as I was able to put it to use for some promo work for my Dads business. He was also an avid photographer as well as a cartoonist, and encouraged me from the beginning with my artwork.
A year ago I started my own business in the art district of Binghamton, where I show my photography. Recently my father passed away, while I miss him and his support so much, along with my family I am continuing my career in his comic strip business. Together, with my Mom, sister, and 2 nephews we will keep the legacy of the BC and Wizard of Id alive.
My father was extremely proud that I had returned to my love of photography and opened my own gallery, Perri Hart Studio. Although his death was unexpected, he had made it clear to me that he wished I would continue my photography career. With the help and support of my family I am able to do just that.
Currently I am working with my family carrying on my father's comic strip legacy while continuing to build a career as a photographic artist.
